OrderPaperToday – The Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Justice Abaze Abubakar Musa Sadiq, as the President, Customary Court of Appeal, FCT Abuja.
This was followed by a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari sent to the chamber for the confirmation, pursuant to section 266(4) of the 1999 constitution as amended and upon the advice of the National Judicial Council.
The letter was read by the Presiding officer, Ike Ekweremadu.
The Senate leader, Ahmad Lawan raised a point of order, indicating that the process of screening the nominee could not be followed due to the end of the tenure of the 8th Senate.
He asked that the chamber suspend it’s standing rule to allow the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly matters (Senate), Ita Enang, usher in the Mr. Sadiq for screening during plenary.
Lawan said: “This Senate and indeed the National Assembly will be sitting for close to the last time and I believe that an issue as request by Mr President is significant that we cannot afford it go through all the processes of confirmation process and procedures.
“I therefore move that we suspend all the process that ordinarily it should have gone through with a view to meeting this national interest by confirming the nominee in the committee of the whole.”
The chamber approved and the nominee made his presentation.
Later, the Senators in the committee of the whole commended the qualifications of the nominee and approved his confirmation.
