OrderPaperToday – The Senate has said it will suspend its plenary after October 20 for three weeks to allow budget defence sessions for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government.
This was disclosed by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, on Thursday while contributing to the debate on the 2021 appropriation bill.
The bill was earlier passed for second reading and accordingly dispensed to the committee on appropriation for extensive legislative scrutiny.
According to him, the defence will last till the first week of November.
He insisted that Ministers and heads of agencies must appear in person to defend their budget proposals and not send representatives.
He warned that erring MDAs risk forfeiture of their allocations.
Lawan also tasked both chambers of the federal parliament to work together on the budget to maintain the usual January to December budget cycle.
Chairman of the appropriation committee, Barau Jibrin, had also told newsmen earlier that the senate hopes to pass the budget by December 3rd. 2020.
