OrderPaperToday – Senator Shuaibu Lau (PDP, Taraba) has lamented over the after effects of devastating rains and a windstorm that shook Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, on the 5th of May 2018.
According to Senator Lau, the incident left 5 people dead, many injured and destroyed properties worth billions of Naira.
“Since the occurrence of the disaster 3 weeks ago, Jalingo metropolis has been in total darkness as several electricity poles and communication masts have fallen down,” he said.
Contributing to Lau’s motion on Thursday, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha (PDP, Taraba) blamed man-made activities such as the felling of trees for the weather changes, while Senator Oluremi Tinubu (APC, Lagos) called for more budgetary provisions for the environment.
The red chamber, in its resolutions, urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials for affected persons, while calling on relevant authorities to ensure the restoration of power to Jalingo.
The Senate also observed a minute’s silence for the dead and advised the Nigerian Communication Commission to ensure that service providers reinforce their masts to withstand future turbulent weather conditions.
