OrderPaperToday– Senator Elisha Abbo was arraigned at the Magistrate Court in Zuba on Monday.
He pleaded not guilty to the assault charge against him.
It would be recalled that a video released by PREMIUMTIMES showed him assaulting a nursing mother at a sex toy shop in Abuja.
Both the Senate and the PDP launched an investigation on the matter while the Police invited him for questioning.
Abbo was arraigned by the Police in court on the offence, which borders on criminal force and assault, both contrary to sections 263 and 264 of Penal Code law.
Although Abbo earlier apologized for his wrongdoing, he pleaded not guilty to the two count charge against him.
The prosecution counsel, James Idachaba requested more time and adjournment from the court because the police has not concluded it’s investigation in a bid for them to open their case.
On the other hand, the defence counsel Adegbite Isaac Adeniyi prayed the court to grant his client bail on self recognition as a serving Senator.
Adeniyi in his argument stated that the defendant will meet the bail condition, be present during the trial and not interfere with the investigation.
“He is a public figure and will not commit any offence. He will also not destroy any evidence that the prosecutor may have against him”, he added.
In his ruling, Magistrate Abdullahi Ilellah granted bail application.
He admitted that it was a bailable offence and the purpose of granting bail is to grant the defendant time to face his trial.
Abbo was granted the defendant bail worth N5million with two sureties who must have verifiable addresses within the Federal Capital Territory.
The matter was adjourned till 22nd July 2019.
