OrderPaperToday – The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki has released some details of the National Assembly budget for the year 2018.
This follows a similar unveiling in 2017 in response to intense pressure from the public.
It would be recalled that OrderPaperNG earlier reported that Saraki requested for details of the budget from the management of the legislature as a prelude to releasing it to the public.
Some details of the budget was made known on Friday via the Senate President’s official twitter handle while noting that the move is “in accordance with the commitment of the leadership of the 8th National Assembly to accountability and transparency.”
From the release, total personnel cost is pegged at N26, 483,039,299; total overhead 93,302,013,406; total recurrent 119,785,052,705; and total capital- 18,569,804,041, giving a grand total allocation for the two chambers at N139, 500,000,000.
Further breakdown are given as follows: National Assembly office received (N15,389,235,912), Senate (N35,582,085,699), House of Representatives (N57,425,137,793), National Assembly Service Commission (N2,736,081,266), and Legislative aides- (N10,202,095,928).
Others are: PAC Senate (N118,970,215), PAC House of Representatives (N142,764,258), General services (N12,384,672,079), National Assembly Legislative Institute (N4,373,813,596) and Service Wide vote (N1,145,143,254).
However, the release lacked adequate details of line items.
While the 2017 budget included amounts for basic items of utilities, material supplies for both chambers such as Newspapers, Magazines, fuel cost, internet charges, water rates, purchase of vehicles among others, the 2018 budget did not indicate the specific amount for them.
The 2018 budget only detailed capital expenditure for the National Assembly office, purchase of computers for legislative aides and service wide votes indicating- Provision for Promotion Arrears, Allowances and Structural Adjustment Activities, Group Life Insurance and Recruitment Exercise.
The following were excluded: cleaning and maintenance services for the complex, travel and transport, honorarium and sitting allowance, publicity and advertisements, breakdown of expenditure for National Assembly Service Commission, purchase of vehicles for both chambers among others.
