OrderPaperToday– The chairman, Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Senator Ibrahim Abdullahi Gobir (APC, Sokoto), on Friday condemned a recent attack by bandits in Sokoto State.
According to reports, 22 lives were claimed at Gangara village, Sabon Birni Local Government area of the state.
Reacting to the incident, Gobir in a press statement issued on Friday, stressed the need for training, retraining and motivation of security operatives.
He equally canvassed for an overhaul of the security structure in the country, while querying the use of military instead of the Nigeria Police in addressing internal security challenges.
The senator called for massive recruitment of qualified youths into the Nigeria Police Force for the ongoing fight against banditry, insurgency, kidnapping , cattle rustling and other related security challenges.
He explained, “This is because, it is not their responsibility to provide internal security , it is not their job, but that of the police.”
Gobir further asked that policemen be fully and adequately deployed to all 774 local government areas in the country, with “each of the local governments provided with no fewer than five Hilux vans, fully equipped with sirens and other modern communication gadgets.
“In the same vein, they should be adequately provided with modern weaponry, ammunition and other related logistics.”
He also assured that the National Assembly “will continue to do our best to provide these direly needed funds, their timely release and ensure their proper utilisation.”
