OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives on Wednesday adopted a motion urging federal government to expedite action on the rehabilitation of Nkanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
The House also asked Mr. President to intervene and ensure immediate commencement of repair works at the airport and decried the non-release of funds to the contractor responsible for the rehabilitation.
To this end, the House further mandated its committee on aviation to interface with the minister of aviation to ensure immediate commencement of work.
The motion was presented by the deputy minority leader, Mr. Toby Okechukwu (Enugu, PDP) and other members representing the south-east region.
The lawmakers who later briefed newsmen after the adoption of the motion expressed concern that the major arterial routes leading to other alternate airports or leading to the region have become dilapidated thereby placing heavy burden on travelers.
The caucus also noted that in spite of the December 2019 deadline for the work to be completed, no contractor has been sighted on site.
“We are worried that the closure of the airport has exposed the travelers to avoidable inconveniences and frustrated their ease of doing business,” Mr. Okechukwu said.
