OrderPaperToday– A bill to establish Federal Police, State Police, National Police Service Commission, National Police Council and State Police Service Commission has been read for the first time in the Senate.
This legislative draft is in response to calls for creation of state police to fight growing insecurity across the country.
The bill sponsored by Senator Ike Ekweremadu was read as 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria (Alteration) bill and seeks to restructure the federal police.
It also provides for the appointment of a commissioner of state police who will be selected by the governor of the state on the advice of the National Police Service Commission, subject to confirmation of such appointment by the House of Assembly of the state.
