OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed for second reading a bill that seeks to ensure the provision of loans for students for higher education pursuit.
House leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, who sponsored the bill said it proposes to provide easy access to higher education for young citizens through the provision of loans from the Nigerian Education Bank.
He said the loans would be interest-free as the country is blessed with immense natural resources to tap from and ensure standard education for future generations.
He said: “Education is the right and not a privilege for Nigerians. Student loans speak volume.”
Contributing to the debate, Mr. Raphael Igbokwe (PDP, Imo) said by the passage of the bill, “more opportunities would be given to young Nigerians who are intelligent but are having financial constraints to continue with their education.”
When the question was put by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, the lawmakers unanimously endorsed the second reading of the bill and subsequently referred to it to the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services .
