OrderPaperToday – The National Assembly petitions tribunal sitting in Abia state has nullified the election of Orji Uzor Kalu as Senator representing Abia north.
Uzor-Kalu who serves as the Senate’s chief whip under the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 30,203 votes against his closest rival, Chief Mao Ohaubunwa of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 20,801 votes in the February 23, 2019 general election.
His election was annulled during the tribunal headed by Justice Cornelius Akintayo on Monday following a petition filed by Senator Ohuanbunwa, the representative in the 8th Senate.
The court ordered Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct
a rerun election for Abia north within 90 days and withdraw the certificate of return issued to Kalu.
Reacting to the judgement, Kalu urged the people of Abia not to lose hope, stressing that his mandate will be re-claimed at the Court of Appeal.
In a statement signed by his media office, the former governor noted that his victory in the 2019 general election, was borne out of his popularity among the people, adding that justice can only be delayed but not denied.
According to him, Ohaubunwa is not popular and will defeat him “any day, any time”
Ohuabunwa on the other hand dedicated his victory at the election tribunal yesterday to God and the people of Abia north who have remained steadfast in his struggle to retrieve his stolen mandate
In a press statement from his Media team, he urged the people in Abia North to come out in their numbers to defend him in the rerun election.
