OrderPaperToday- In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, OrderPaperNG presents the softer sides of 10 lawmakers with a look at the objects of their affection.
This list includes lawmakers in current and previous assemblies.
1) Femi and Salamatu Gbajabiamila
The duo can be regarded as a “show-stopping couple”. The lawmaker went from Lagos, all the way “across the Niger” to Plateau State to pick his bride and it has been like a fairy tale since then.
At any event, they stun with their mind-blowing attires. On his wife’s 50th birthday in 2018, the speaker of the 9th House of Representatives surprised his wife with a multi-million naira Mercedes Benz G-Wagon estimated at N75 million!
2) Yakubu and Gimbiya Dogara
Yakubu Dogara was the speaker of the 8th House of Representatives and incumbent lawmaker in the 9th assembly.
His wife, Gimbiya, is known for the active role she played in rallying wives of lawmakers to support their husbands’ political activities during his tenure as the head of the Green Chamber. Everybody close to the private life this couple share know they are deeply involved in each other’s lives and best friends as well.
Celebrating her birthday in 2018, Dogara celebrated her with this tweet: “Happy birthday to a virtuous woman, the rock of the family and the love of my life. Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself as you continue to flourish like the palm tree bearing fruits in season and out of season.”
The couple who both hail from Bauchi are blessed with 2 children.
3) Bukola and Toyin Saraki
If you are an ardent follower of this duo, you would know by now that they both express cute shows of love at any given time.
Although he is known as a medical doctor, banker, political grandlord and a former Senate president, he has a soft side when it comes to his wife, Toyin.
The lovebirds of over 27 years leave you with serious couple goals.
Toyin, in an interview, once explained how she has been able to keep her relationship with her husband rosy despite political odds.
She said, “I never for one moment felt like ’a governor’s wife’ because when my husband and I got married, he most certainly was not a governor and I reminded myself of this whenever I felt things were getting out of hand! Being a governor’s wife then and a Senate president’s wife, was/is a responsibility, not a lifestyle, for a finite term of years, and with it, for me, came huge sacrifices which I was honored and humbled to make in support of my husband’s political leadership.”
Year in year out, Bukola consistently celebrates his wife on her birthday on his social media platforms.
Together, they have four children and one grand child.
4.) Remi and Bola Tinubu
Call them the power couple. He is former senator, she is an incumbent senator. While Bola is now an APC chieftain, Remi remains a strong female figure in the Nigerian political scene.
She once said in an interview that she fell in love with Bola at first sight, describing his eyes as “kind”.
The senator said: “The first thing to know is the attraction that brought the two of us together. I saw his eyes and thought he has very kind eyes. That was one of the things that attracted me to him. I believe that from the eyes, one can know the mind of a person. I think he got me with his eyes; they were very kind and penetrating eyes and that was how we started.”
Their love continues to wax strong 33 years into the marriage.
5) Olusola and Christianah Adeyeye
Senator Olusola Adeyeye was the chief whip of the 8th Senate and his wife is the director general of NAFDAC. He is known for his wise sayings in chamber and expressing undying love for his wife.
Their love story remains invigorating as they weathered storms in their youth and blossomed together into their old age.
One of their daughters, Oluwatobi, in an interview, said her father’s favourite food is anything cooked by his wife.
They are blessed with children and grand children.
6) Emeka and Ebere Ihedioha
We have another fascinating couple here. Emeka Ihedioha was the deputy speaker of the 7th House of Representatives and a former governor of Imo State before a ruling of the Supreme Court ousted him.
During this turbulent period, his wife, Ebere, lovingly expressed support for him in a tweet, saying, “My Love, my Partner and my Friend. Nkem! #IGotYourBack.”
A peep into Emeka’s Twitter bio, you will find
this: “The past governor of Imo State, Former Deputy speaker, House of Representatives, dad to four children and husband to an amazing woman @ihediohaebere.”
7) Alhassan Ado Doguwa and wives
Majority leader of the House of Representatives, Ado Doguwa, has been a political figure in the House and Kano State but not much was known about his family until his recent swearing in ceremony in the National Assembly.
The lawmaker hit celebrity status when he boasted about being a powerful man in the chamber and at home and buttressed his ‘powerful status’ point with a display of his 4 wives who, he added, have bore him 27 children.
Doguwa said: “Mr. Speaker, I would like to let you know that with me today here, are my four respected wives. I have asked them to rise here to respect the House on behalf of my family and one of the reasons is to let you know that when members call me a powerful man, I am not only powerful on the floor of the House, I am also powerful at home because I deal with four wives.
“Mr Speaker, these four wives you have seen have produced 27 kids for me and I am still counting. I am still counting.”
Based on the aforementioned, he makes our list with the four objects of his affection.
8) Adeola and Temitope Olamilekan
Adeola Olamilekan is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance in the 9th assembly.
The duo met as journalists in Guardian Newspaper, a relationship which has blossomed into 19 years of marriage.
In a chat with Guardian, Temitope said she calls her husband endearing names like “sweety, honey..”
Speaking on how they have sustained their marriage, she said, “I will say it is patience and endurance that are the basic ingredients of any successful marriage.”
9) Bukar and Khadijat Abba Ibrahim
This couple were in power in Yobe State when Abba Bukar Ibrahim was governor for 8 years while she held the portfolio of Transportation commissioner.
When their tenure ended, she got elected into the House of Representatives in 2007 while he moved to the Senate in the same year. She was in the Green Chamber until 2016 when she was appointed as minister of state of Foreign Affairs.
She later resigned the seat to contest for Damaturu/Gujba/Gulani/Tarmuwa Federal Constituency of Yobe State, an election she won.
Her husband retired as senator after serving three terms in the chamber.
10) Adamu and Zainab Bulkachuwa
For this couple, there is separation of power – the husband is a Bauchi senator, while his wife is a respected judge, the president of the Nigerian Court of Appeal.
While they are a love item on the home front, she has reportedly never been caught wielding her legal status in favour of her husband’s political ambition.
This couple is the number 10 on our list and conclude this special Valentine report.
