OrderPaperToday – As the National Assembly rounds up its orientation and induction programme for legislators-elect, the Director of Information, Mr. Emmanuel Agada, has enjoined participants to pragmatize all they have learnt so as to boost governance in terms of meaningful legislation.
Mr. Agada who spoke with OrderPaperNG in the course of the week-long training said the orientation would help both the staff of the National Assembly and the lawmakers to work optimally in the interest of better legislative services to Nigerians.
According to him, “the orientation program has been quite revealing and it goes to show that a lot of thinking and planning has been put in place particularly the content for lawmakers-elect which indicates that management has done retrospectively in looking at those issues and challenges.
“Some members in the current assembly have passed through these processes and that is where institutional memory comes to play to prepare the minds of our members-elect on the bumpy part of legislative activities.”
Speaking on the content of the programme, Mr. Agada gave thumbs up, saying: “I think that the content of the courses are good because a lot of them have spoken to the need for the lawmakers to familiarize themselves with the structures and workings of the NASS. And that was the very first paper that was presented by the Clerk of NASS, Alhaji Dani Omolori who actually opened on the existence of the NASS.”
He continued: “In 1999 we started with four directorates but today we have over 34. The lawmakers were taught procedures on how to elect principal officers. And the different rules in the two chambers because without those rules you can’t know how to move or sponsor a bill. A presentation was done by staff to enlighten the lawmakers.”
Recall that orientation/induction for the 9th national assembly members-elect commenced with a first batch on Sunday, 31 March, 2019. A second batch just rounded up the programme.
